Impending migration of the nsd-users mailing list to community.nlnetlabs.nl

Dear nsd-users list,

Following our previous announcement [1] of NLnet Labs' new platform for
discussion on our various open source projects, we would like to
introduce community.nlnetlabs.nl [2], our new platform for discussion on
our various open source projects.

Over the last years, the number of projects and collaboration platforms
we maintain for our community has grown to the point where we wanted to
offer a consolidated experience.
We chose Discourse because this platform allows you to continue using
email, but also offers a searchable web interface.

NSD will have its own category which will be the equivalent of this
nsd-users mailing list.

We have now entered the last phase of that transition which includes the
**migration** of this nsd-users mailing list.

This is a pre-notice that as of **April 1st 2026**, you will no longer
be able to subscribe and post to the nsd-users mailing list.
A reminder email will follow on the same day.

The mailing list archives will be kept for at least one year at their
mailman instance.

The mailing list archives will be imported into the Discourse instance.
This means two things:
- All the past information and knowledge of this mailing list will be
available in the new platform, also with an easier searchable
   interface.
- User email information will be retained per message.
When a user signs up, all the previous messages to the mailing list
   account.

Please note that we will not subscribe you to community.nlnetlabs.nl
automatically, so if you want to stay up to date on NSD related
announcements, please create an account.
For those of you that prefer to stick to an e-mail workflow, have a look
at the FAQ [3] linked below.

Lastly, please keep our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines [4] in
mind.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to community.nlnetlabs.nl !

Be aware that the NSD category will be available starting on April
1st, after the migration is completed.

Hello Yorgos & all NLnetlabs folks,

these are sad news. Not having a mailing-list is not the way
of support / community, I prefer.
Looks like Nlnetlabs already made the final move to stop supporting this way of communication.
Maybe this it the point, I've to think about switching to other products.

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

The decision to move away from mailing lists was not taken lightly.

We made several tries in the past to find capable mailing list hosting providers and either they were not ticking all our boxes or we had to migrate back to our own self-hosting situation.

Since we are a small developer-focused team, any IT-like activities, in particular emergency ones, would take priority away from things that actually need priority.

When Discourse was brought up as an alternative to a community support channel, we considered the idea only because email-only interaction is possible with that platform.

We have documented in our FAQ [1] how that interaction would work after initially signing up and setting some options in the web UI.

We recognize all our users' valuable contributions to this community, especially yours throughout the years, and we hope that you'll give the new platform a go.
We can work together to iron out any inconveniences that may arise; we are also new to this effort.

Best regards,
-- Yorgos

PS. Since today is the last active day of the mailing list, we are happy
to discuss this further also off the mailing list. We can always be reached at labs@nlnetlabs.nl.

Dear nsd-users list,

As of today, April 1 2026, following the previous announcement quoted below, you can no longer subscribe and post to the nsd-users mailing list.
We will keep the archives available for at least one year.

As previously shared, the mailing list archives will also be imported into the Discourse instance at:
  https://community.nlnetlabs.nl/

This means two things:
- All the past information and knowledge of this mailing list will be available in the new platform, also with an easier searchable interface.
- User email information will be retained per message. When a user signs up, all the previous messages to the mailing list sent with that email address will be linked to the new activated account.

Please note that we will not subscribe you to community.nlnetlabs.nl
automatically, so if you want to stay up to date on NSD related
announcements, please create an account.
For those of you that prefer to stick to an e-mail workflow, have a look
at the FAQ [1] linked below.

Lastly, please keep our Code of Conduct and Community Guidelines [2] in
mind.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to community.nlnetlabs.nl !

Be aware that the migration window will take place at the platform **between 07:00 UTC and 09:00 UTC on April 1st**.
During that time the platform will be in read-only mode to facilitate the import.
Signing up will not work during that time as well.
After the migration window is closed the 'NSD' category will become available.

Migration has concluded.
nsd-users welcome to community.nlnetlabs.nl!

Thank you for your migration work. Please clarify current status of our community platform. My understanding is below, is it correct?

  1. unbound-users and nsd-users mailing list are terminated and no longer accept / deliver any message.
  2. If I want to receive announcements from NL net labs or community support on Unbound and NSD, I should sign up to Discourse site (community.nlnetlabs.nl).
  3. If I didn’t sign up to the Discourse site I can read (only) messages posted to the site.
  4. Messages posted old mailing list (nsd-user and unbound-users) are imported to the Discourse site.
  1. Indeed.
  2. Yes. If you don’t want to sign up (i.e., participate), Discourse also provides RSS feeds. You can read more about it in our FAQ.
  3. Yes. The Discourse instance is open to the public.
  4. Indeed, like this very own topic which was started on the mailing list and is continued here.
